I first met Darci twenty years ago when she was my son's teacher at Giant Steps, CT School. In the years since, as my son moved on to other schools, I maintained a relationship with Darci. She was my go-to person if I had an issue with any subsequent programs. Darci was straight forward and direct, yet she spoke with incredible compassion and understanding to me as a parent and had a knack for presenting with clarity my ideal vs the reality.
At one point, it became clear that bringing him back into district was the best alternative. Darci was integral to my son's transition to his public high school. She worked with me to develop a thorough understanding of the total IEP including appropriate goals and objectives, data and measurement of those goals, modifications, hours of service and more. How the IEP needs to be written was always difficult for me to understand, but I trusted Darci wholeheartedly and learned a tremendous amount from her through this process. Darci also had the trust and support of the district as they agreed to her involvement and often turned to her to assist in areas of needed compromise. Together we were able to develop an appropriate plan to start my son back after having been in private, specialized schools for several years.
During the time she was assisting us, Darci helped develop revisions to the IEP and transition plan. She attended several PPTs and made numerous in-house observations. In order to do all of this effectively, Darci needed to have an understanding of a complex medical history and educational file. She did so with thoroughness and attention to detail. She also worked with my son to ensure his concerns were being met and to help ease some of his anxieties around the transition.
Proficient in every way, from the simple to the complex, Darci was able to see all the needs for the best possible outcome for my son. She skillfully walked an often-difficult line between two parties, ensuring that both district and parent felt heard and represented.
